Bone leveler instruments are commonly used to fix a bone position during a surgical operation. In orthopedic surgical operation bolts, screws, plates, pins and other mechanical devices are being inserted into a patient’s to fix broken bones.
Normally, to access the bone an incision is made through the skin. Through that incision, a bone leveler can be inserted to contact the surface of the bone to level the bone in place and allow the insertion of insertion of screws and other devices be made possible. But oftentimes, the presence of a bone leveler hinders the access of the surgeon to the bone. Usually to employ to the bone, a regular bone leveler instrument are placed above an incision and extend downwardly to keep the incision open. The existing apparatus is complicated to use, expensive, and really requires sterilization after using it. Thus there is a need for such device which can be useful for orthopedic surgical operations. A bone leveler should be a device which is convenient to use, easy to adjust, disposable, inexpensive and easy to manufacture. It should provide the surgeon an automatic tension feedback.
The bone leveler surgical instrument is composed of a first blade member, next the second blade member and lastly the elastic member. The first blade member consists of a forward end and a rearward end. The second blade member also consists of a forward end and a rearward end. The elastic part which consists of one end that is received by the first blade member and the other opposite end is received by the second blade member. The elastic member is a thin form of latex-free surgical tubing. Usually the length of surgical tubing should match the circumference of the limb or portion of the body to which the bone leveler apparatus is to be applied
The blade members has thesame configuration. Like, the first blade member has a planar portion lengthen inwardly from the rearward end. To allow the elastic member to extend there through, an appropriate hole is formed in this planar portion. Same is true with the second blade member has a planar portion; again an appropriate hole was made in the planar portion to permit the opposite end of the elastic member to lengthen there through.
In a surgical operation, the surgeon determines the blades members and when the bone has been properly grasped and moved to its desired position, the surgeon will simply hold the end of the surgical tubing pulling it forward to achieve the required amount of tension, and then loop it backwardly so that the end will move within the slot end of the second blade member. This is being done for bone to be in right position while in an on going surgical procedure. The surgeon can only remove one end from its slot of the blade members as soon as the operation is completed. Then the tension in surgical tubing will also be released. The blade members can be withdrawn from the incision. The incision then can be closed.
