In a surgical operation, internal organs, bones and tissues are retracted through the opening created by incision. The holding back of body tissue is called “surgical retraction”. Retractors are instrument used to hold the incision open and expose the surgical site. Kinds and size of retractors varies but the use of it depends on the type of surgical procedure to be performed. The small kinds are handheld instruments use to retract skin and subcutaneous tissue in shallow surgical site. The larger ones are heavier use to retract tissue and organs of deep surgical sites. Each surgical retractor has its own specific properties depending on how it was designed for use. Hand held retractors are prepared, held in place and kept by surgical assistant during and after the surgical operation. (more…)

The conduct of clinical studies and laboratory experiments for fixing implants such as the components of replacing joint protheses by selfcuring polymethylmethacrylate. Before the implant insertion, in attaining a better result the cement application should be under pressure. There are two principal effects of pressure. First, to improve the quality and strength of the bone cement material and since it is important that the cement should penetrate the interstices of a bone structure, the pressure helps develop the quality and strength of the interlocking capacity of the cement and the bone, making these results more desirable. (more…)

These instruments are major investment for hospitals that requires proper care and handling for proper function and longevity. Orthopedic surgical instruments are highly specialized, finely made medical tools. It could be a handheld device such as the surgical scissor. This instrument may vary in use, but medical center technicians and operating staff is able to recognize, assemble, and use the different types of surgical scissors depending on the need for operation. This are reusable instruments but requires careful processing to assure longer life and prevent transmission of infection. Surgical scissors are one of the surgical instruments needed for orthopedic surgical operations. Prior of the operation it is necessary that they are clean, tested, check for functionality and assembled according to an accurate and detailed proper arrangement. Surgical scissors belongs to handheld types of orthopedic instruments and varies in functions, designs, sizes and processing requirements. (more…)
